What Is a Main Breaker?

A Main Breaker is the primary overcurrent protection device in an electrical panel. The device controls power to the panel’s branch circuits and can shut off power to the building’s electrical system. The main breaker also opens the circuit when current exceeds its rated capacity, helping limit damage from overloads or short circuits.

Key Takeaways About Main Breaker

  • It controls power entering the electrical panel.
  • It may trip during an overload or short circuit.
  • It is not the same as every branch circuit breaker.

How Main Breaker Works

Main Breaker

A main breaker sits inside the electrical panel and controls the power supplied to the branch circuits. The breaker monitors current flowing through the panel. If an overload or short circuit causes excessive current, the internal mechanism trips and opens the circuit.

The handle also provides a way to disconnect panel power during service. A tripped handle may rest between the on and off positions, so resetting it requires moving it fully off before switching it on. A breaker that trips again can point to a continuing electrical fault, an overloaded circuit, or a problem inside the panel.

The busbar distributes power from the main breaker to branch breakers. The service entrance connects the building’s electrical system with the incoming utility supply.

Main breaker

From the Center Electric Service team

When we inspect a main breaker, we check its operation, connections, signs of heat damage, and relationship to the panel’s branch circuits. We also look for recurring trips and conditions that could cause them. Our team records the panel condition before recommending repair or replacement work.

Main Breaker in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner loses power throughout the house while individual branch breakers remain on. The main breaker may have tripped, but the panel still needs inspection if it will not reset or trips again.
