What Is a Three-Way Switch?
A Three-Way Switch is a wall switch arrangement that controls one light or lighting circuit from two separate locations. Each switch connects through traveler wires, so either location can change the light's state. This setup is common in hallways, stairways, and rooms with more than one entrance.

Key Takeaways About Three-Way Switch
- Two switches control one light circuit.
- Traveler wires connect the switching paths.
- It is not the same as a single-pole switch.
How Three-Way Switch Works

A Three-Way Switch uses two switching devices to direct power along different wiring paths. Each device has a common terminal and traveler terminals. The traveler wires carry the connection between the switches, while the common terminals connect with the power source and the light circuit.

Changing either switch changes the active path through the pair. The light turns on when the circuit path is complete and turns off when the path is interrupted. A single-pole switch has one control location, so it does not provide the same switching arrangement.
Practical use
Electricians identify the common wire, traveler wires, and grounding connection before replacing a device. A replacement switch must match the existing wiring arrangement. A light switch that seems defective may also have a loose connection or a wiring error elsewhere in the circuit.

From the Center Electric Service team
When we inspect a Three-Way Switch, we trace the common and traveler connections before changing the device. Our team also checks whether the two switch locations operate the same light as intended. Correct terminal placement matters because a similar-looking switch can produce confusing operation when wired incorrectly.
Three-Way Switch in Practice: A Real-World Example
A hallway light may need control from both ends so you can change the light's state from either entrance. A Three-Way Switch at each location provides that shared control through the connected traveler paths.
