What Is Conduit?

Conduit is a protective pathway that encloses and routes electrical conductors. Conduit may be made from metal or nonmetallic material, depending on the installation and environmental conditions. It helps protect wiring from physical damage, supports an organized installation, and provides a defined route through walls, ceilings, crawl spaces, and exposed areas.

Key Takeaways About Conduit

  • Conduit protects conductors from physical damage.
  • The pathway may be metal or nonmetallic.
  • Conduit is not the same as electrical cable.

How Conduit Works

Hands use blue-handled pliers to grip a corrugated metal conduit on a wooden workbench

Conduit creates a continuous route for electrical conductors between connection points. Installers select the pathway material and shape based on exposure, physical conditions, and the wiring layout. Conductors pass through the conduit after the route is secured.

Fittings connect sections and help the route change direction without leaving conductors exposed. A junction box may connect conduit runs where wires branch or equipment connects. During an electrical code correction, the existing route is checked for secure connections, suitable protection, and enough room for the conductors.

From the Center Electric Service team

When we inspect conduit, we check its route, fittings, supports, and connection points. We also verify that conductors are protected and that the pathway suits the installation conditions. For electrical code correction work, we trace the complete run before recommending a repair.

Conduit in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Riverside home may have exposed wiring near a service area that needs better protection. Conduit can route the conductors along the wall and connect them to an approved box.
