What Is a Busbar?
A busbar is a solid metal conductor inside electrical equipment that distributes current to multiple circuits. In a service panel, the busbar connects branch circuit breakers to incoming power. Its design supports organized connections and helps keep panel wiring clear. A busbar may carry ungrounded or grounded conductors depending on its location and function.

Key Takeaways About Busbar
- A busbar is a rigid conductor, not a circuit breaker.
- Panel breakers connect to the busbar to receive power.
- A busbar is not the same as a grounding bar.
How Busbar Works

Busbar carries electrical current through a panel so connected breakers can supply separate branch circuits. Breakers attach to conductive contact points along the bar. The bar connects to an incoming conductor or service connection, then sends power through each breaker when the breaker is engaged.

A panel may contain separate bars for ungrounded conductors, grounded conductors, or equipment grounding conductors. The arrangement depends on the panel design and the point where the conductors connect. A damaged busbar can show heat marks, loose contact points, or breaker connections that no longer fit securely. During a panel upgrade, the busbar must match the panel assembly and the breakers approved for that assembly.

From the Center Electric Service team
When we inspect a panel, we check the busbar for heat damage, corrosion, loose connections, and poor breaker contact. We also verify that replacement breakers match the panel assembly. During an Electrical Panel Upgrade, our team examines the busbar condition before moving circuits into new equipment.
Busbar in Practice: A Real-World Example
A Riverside homeowner adds a new kitchen circuit during an Electrical Panel Upgrade. The electrician checks that the new breaker seats correctly on the busbar and that the panel has suitable space for the circuit connection.
